Dr. Bott appointed Superintendent of Schools by Bishop Scharfenberger

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger has appointed Dr. Christopher Bott as the new Superintendent of Schools for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany. Dr. Bott has been serving in that role on an interim basis since August 15, 2024, when Dr. Giovanni Virgiglio’s resignation took effect.

“Chris Bott needs no introduction, even as we welcome him in his new post,” said Bishop Scharfenberger. “An esteemed professional with broad experience and longtime dedication to Catholic education, he brings to our mission a host of fresh ideas and a collaborative spirit. He is deeply committed to holistic models involving our entire community, especially families, in the lifelong process of Catholic education,” added Bishop Scharfenberger. “Our prayers and support go with him as he leads us forward.”

Dr. Bott has a long history with the Catholic School Office. Before taking over as interim superintendent, he served as Associate Superintendent, a title he held since 2018. He also served previously as principal at Catholic Central High School in Troy, and the former St. James School in Albany. Prior to those roles, he had been teaching in Catholic schools in New York State since the late 90s.

“Dr. Bott’s career and vocation has pointed to this time and place to serve in Catholic education,” said the Very Rev. Robert Longobucco, vicar for education in the diocese.  “His commitment to the Gospel and the education and well-being of every child is why he has pursued this path and why he is an ideal fit for our diocese right now. I know I share in the excitement of our Catholic schools community in welcoming Chris to this new stage of servant leadership,” added Fr. Longobucco.

Please pray for Dr. Bott as he continues to serve the Catholic schools in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany.
