Rensselaer Awarded $600,000 Grant through NYS Homes and Community Renewal

(Rensselaer, NY – March 12, 2025) Mayor Stammel and the City of Rensselaer Common Council are pleased to announce that the city is receiving an award of $600,000 from New York State Homes and Community Renewal (NYSHCR) under the 2024 HOME Grant Program. The award, granted through a yearly competitive application process, represents a continuation of the HOME Program in the City of Rensselaer since 2017. To-date, the funding has helped over 50 single-family homes make substantial home improvement upgrades which benefit the health and safety of its occupants.

Rensselaer Mayor Michael Stammel commented “As a certified Pro-Housing Community, the NYSHCR HOME Program has been a vital tool in continuing to revitalize Rensselaer’s proud neighborhoods, provide jobs to qualified local contractors and retain residents by helping assist them to stay in safe code-compliant homes.

The 2024-year award cycle will continue the positive impact of the HOME program by assisting approximately ten (10) low-to-moderate income households make repairs, safety upgrades and accessibility modifications. Grant funding is only available to City of Rensselaer residents who qualify for the program. Eligibility is based on median income and owner-occupancy of homes. Additional consideration is given to Seniors, Veterans and/or persons with a physical disability and/or traumatic brain injury. Owners who receive assistance must agree to remain in their homes for a period of at least five (5) years after all of the project work is complete. Interested City of Rensselaer applicants are encouraged to apply through the application available on both the City of Rensselaer (https://rensselaerny.gov/) and the Planning Department (www.rensselaerplanning.com) webpage under “HOME Rehab Grant”, or in-person daily from 8AM to 4PM at the Planning Department in City Hall. The NYS HCR HOME Program is administered by the New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation (HTFC) and uses federally allocated HOME Investment Partnership Program funds to expand the supply of decent, safe, and affordable housing within the State.
