Pioneer and Special Olympics New York will join forces this week to host a first-ever Unified Bocce Tournament, part of its yearlong partnership aimed at promoting social inclusion and friendship through sport.
The event will be held on Thursday, April 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Pioneer’s Headquarters, 652 Albany Shaker Road in Colonie.
The Unified Bocce Tournament is the latest event underwritten by a $20,000 sponsorship provided by the Pioneer Charitable Foundation to support Special Olympics NY. Aligned with the foundation’s mission of “Helping Kids be Kids,” the majority of funding benefits the Unified Sports program, which brings together individuals with and without intellectual disabilities to compete as teammates.
Pioneer President and CEO Tom Amell and Special Olympics NY President and CEO Stacey Hengsterman will offer brief opening remarks at 4 p.m. Following that, 32 players – 16 from Pioneer and 16 from Special Olympics NY – will compete on integrated teams for gold, silver and bronze medals.
Since it was established in 2018, the Pioneer Charitable Foundation has donated $1.9 million to support more than 400 local nonprofit organizations that work to improve the health and welfare of Capital Region children, offering housing, nutrition, or health care, and educational, social and recreational programs. In addition, Pioneer employees contribute hundreds of hours annually in local volunteer service.
The event will provide excellent photo/video and interview opportunities in a highly visual setting. Reporters, photographers and videographers are welcome to attend.
